*warning* - this video may give you the willies!This was the worst aphid infestation I’ve witnessed. I noticed these guys starting to collect on a Staghorn Sumac back in early June, and just as an experiment I decided to leave them be to see what would happen.

What started out as just a few dozen quickly turned into literally thousands of aphids. I was really surprised by the lack of predators once the population was so large. I was also surprised by the amount of waste produced by these guys (shavings from eggs/dead aphids, a waxy substance covering all the leaves).

The population peaked around mid-July then I think the heat finally got to them and their numbers started to decline. The Sumac survived with very little remaining evidence of the infestation outside of that waxy coating on the leaves. Next time I’ll bring in some predator insects and see how long it will take them to eradicate the colony!
