It’s time for another #NameThatNative! 🌿🐛 This we It’s time for another #NameThatNative! 🌿🐛

This week’s mystery plant is a tall, elegant wetland wildflower with soft clusters of rosy-pink blooms that butterflies can’t resist. It grows naturally along shorelines, ditches, and rain-soaked garden edges… and monarch caterpillars depend on it.

Can you guess which native plant this is? Drop your best guess below! 👇✨

If you’ve ever wondered why native milkweed is so If you’ve ever wondered why native milkweed is so important for monarch butterflies, it’s because their entire life cycle depends on it (literally!)

Monarchs lay their eggs exclusively on milkweed. When those tiny caterpillars hatch, milkweed becomes their only food source. The leaves provide the nutrients they need to grow through multiple stages before forming a chrysalis. Without native milkweed, monarch caterpillars simply can’t survive.

But the connection doesn’t stop there.
Native milkweed species, like Common Milkweed, Swamp Milkweed, and Butterfly Weed, bloom at the perfect time to support adult monarchs, offering nectar for their long migration. These native plants are perfectly synced with monarch biology in a way cultivars and non-native plants can’t fully replace.

If you want to support monarchs at home, planting native milkweed is one of the most powerful steps you can take. A small patch in your yard can become a complete life-cycle habitat for these incredible pollinators.

Native plants are hands-down the best choice for s Native plants are hands-down the best choice for supporting pollinators. But here’s the thing: not all cultivars are created equal. 🌿

Some native cultivars are bred mostly for looks, with double blooms or unusual colors that can actually make it harder for bees and butterflies to reach the pollen and nectar they need. Others, though, stay true to their roots - keeping the same bloom time, flower shape, and ecological benefits as the original native species.

Those are the real winners in your garden. They bring the beauty you love and keep feeding the local ecosystem. 🌸🐝

So if you’re adding cultivars for the purpose of achieving a certain look or fitting in a certain size, look for ones that still act like the wild native version (your pollinators will thank you!)

This photo was taken in late August, just as the blooms were beginning to fade. Even as the flowers start to dry, this native perennial keeps its striking white clusters standing tall above silvery green foliage. Its strong stems and drought tolerance make it one of the most reliable summer bloomers in a native garden.

Pollinators love it through peak season, and its seed heads add late-summer texture to prairie landscapes.

Can you guess the name of this resilient native wildflower? 👇

Fireflies rely on more than just summer evenings t Fireflies rely on more than just summer evenings to thrive. They need native plant habitats, dark nights, and sustainable yard practices to complete their life cycle.

By planting natives, reducing outdoor lighting, and leaving leaf litter in place, you create the perfect overlap that supports fireflies and boosts biodiversity in your own backyard.

I always get a lot of questions about how/when to I always get a lot of questions about how/when to plant seeds this time of year. You can, of course, choose to sow outdoors now and let mother nature do her thing. But if you're planning to start your seeds indoors over the winter, you'll want to plan ahead for cold stratification! This is just the process of mimicking the cold temperatures seeds naturally get outdoors - but inside your home. Some plants require a cold, moist stratification period, while others do just fine with a dry stratification.

Check out our full video on dry stratifying native seeds to choose the method that will give your seeds the highest chance of germination.

These seed pods are just beginning to split open, revealing tightly packed seeds waiting to catch the wind. This plant is a favorite for monarch caterpillars and produces clusters of soft pink blooms in midsummer. Can you name this Michigan native? 👀

Everyday yard choices can have a direct impact on Everyday yard choices can have a direct impact on insect populations.

• Bright outdoor lights at night can reduce firefly activity by nearly 25%.
• Leaf blowers often reach 90 decibels, which disturbs insects and harms soil health.
• Using warm, shielded lights and replacing blowers with simple raking can help create a healthier habitat for pollinators.

Even small adjustments can make a meaningful difference for the environment.
Rain gardens are one of the most effective ways to Rain gardens are one of the most effective ways to reduce urban flash flooding. 🌧️

By capturing stormwater runoff, they slow the flow of water and allow it to soak naturally into the ground. Native plants with deep root systems improve soil permeability, stabilize slopes, and filter out pollutants before they reach rivers and lakes. A well-designed rain garden can infiltrate up to 2 inches of water per hour, making it a practical and sustainable solution for both homes and communities.

Hint 1: This tall wildflower has square stems with leaves that join together to form a “cup,” often holding water for birds and pollinators.
Hint 2: Its bright yellow blooms can reach 8 feet high, making it a true showstopper in any native garden.

Did you know your front yard can act like natural Did you know your front yard can act like natural air conditioning? 🌿 Native gardens can cool surface temperatures by 20–45°F compared to unshaded areas, while lawns only manage a fraction of that.

By replacing turfgrass with native plants, you:
💧 Lower air temps through evapotranspiration (2–4°F cooler)
🌳 Create shaded microclimates that are up to 9°F cooler than lawns
🦋 Extend foraging time for monarchs and other pollinators during heat waves

It’s a win for your comfort, your local ecosystem, and Michigan’s pollinators. Ready to start your native front-yard garden?
